Why You Stay Up Late & How to Fix it

I am a prolific procrastinator, especially of things I knowingly want to avoid (and probably many more things I want to avoid subconsciously). Matter of fact, this article has been sitting in my inbox waiting to be read since March 25th. Finally taking a moment to read it (in July), I found that it actually enlightened me as to why I also don't go to bed even when I'm tired.

sleep procrastination

It's called sleep procrastination; who knew that was even a thing? I've spoken to a number of people who do the same thing and that conversation always ends in some variation of, "I don't know why I do that."

Well, some sleep professionals have figured it out and the most notable suggestion to help fix it is the "Power-Down Hour" suggested by "the Sleep Doctor," Michael Breus.

The Power-Down Hour is composed of three 20-minute segments:

  • The first 20 minutes are dedicated to things that need to be done.

  • The second 20 minutes are set aside for hygiene (such as a hot bath).

  • The final 20 minutes are for relaxation (such as meditation, prayer, or journaling).

I'll do this for a week, see how it goes, and let you know. If you try it, let me know how it goes for you.
